Saved By The Bell: FRANCO COLAPINTO

Williams to lease Franco Colapinto to Alpine F1 Team

Franco Colapinto, the latest car destroyer on the 2024 grid as we knew it.

The 21-year-old Argentine driver, who burst onto the F1 scene in 2024, is now poised for a new chapter as he joins Alpine F1 Team as a reserve driver for the 2025 season.

A Meteoric Rise

Colapinto's path to Formula 1 began in the karting circuits of Argentina, where he quickly made a name for himself by winning national championships in 2016 and 2018. His transition to single-seater racing was equally impressive, claiming the Spanish F4 Championship title in 2019 with an astounding 11 victories and 13 podium finishes. The young driver's talent didn't go unnoticed, catching the eye of two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso, who supported Colapinto during his formative years. This endorsement from one of the sport's legends underscored Colapinto's potential and set the stage for his rapid ascent through the junior formula.

The 2024 Breakthrough

Colapinto's Formula 1 debut came unexpectedly in 2024 when Williams Racing called upon him to replace Logan Sargeant for the final nine races of the season. This sudden promotion thrust the Argentine into the spotlight, making him the first driver from his country to compete in F1 since Gastón Mazzacane in 2001. Despite the pressure of his mid-season entry, Colapinto delivered performances that belied his rookie status. In just his second Grand Prix appearance, he secured an impressive 8th place finish in Azerbaijan, scoring his first championship points. He followed this with another points-scoring drive in the United States, finishing 10th. Colapinto's nine-race stint with Williams yielded a total of five championship points, outscoring his predecessor's entire season and a half. His ability to adapt quickly to F1 machinery and deliver results in high-pressure situations caught the attention of several teams, including Alpine and Red Bull.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As Colapinto transitions to Alpine on a multi-year deal, the move represents both an opportunity and a challenge. While he won't be on the starting grid for the 2025 season, his role as a reserve driver places him in a prime position to potentially secure a race seat in the future. Alpine's decision to sign Colapinto is a clear indication of their faith in his abilities. Flavio Briatore, Alpine's Executive Advisor, praised the young driver, stating, "Clearly, Franco is among the best young talents in motorsport right now. It is fair to say his appearance on the Formula 1 grid last year caught many, me included, by surprise and his performances have been very impressive for a rookie driver". The move to Alpine also puts subtle pressure on their current driver lineup, particularly rookie Jack Doohan. While Alpine has confirmed Doohan for the 2025 season, Colapinto's presence as a highly-rated reserve driver could create a competitive atmosphere within the team. For Colapinto, the 2025 season will be crucial for his development. He will have the opportunity to work closely with an established F1 team, gaining valuable experience in car development, race strategy, and the intricacies of top-tier motorsport operations. His duties will include attending races, participating in simulator work, and potentially taking part in practice sessions and young driver tests.

In the ever-evolving landscape of Formula 1, Franco Colapinto's story is one of promise and potential. As he steps into his role at Alpine, the young Argentine stands on the cusp of what could be a long and successful career in the sport's elite echelon. For fans and observers alike, the 2025 season promises to be an intriguing chapter in the unfolding narrative of one of motorsport's brightest young stars.
